There’s lots going on at Renaissance and we’re excited about what is beginning to unfold. Here’s the lowdown on what we’re doing and what the coming months will look like…
When my wife and I moved to Boston five months ago, we attended an event our community was throwing in our neighborhood our first week here. It was there that we first experienced this amazing Asian-fusion flavored food truck, which instantly became a favorite for us. Little did we know, it was one of a larger fleet that are all across the city. Since then we’ve run into their food trucks in other places, and of course, we continue to devour their amazing cuisine. Better yet, we’ve also discovered that they’ve opened several brick and mortar restaurants, which you better believe we’ll be frequenting often.
I tell you that, because I think it’s a great picture of how we’re starting Renaissance. As strange as it might sound, a new church starting can often mirror a new restaurant beginning. Churches often look for a physical location, and much like a restaurant they work on what they’re offering and the experience they are providing, hoping people come back and invite others.
There’s nothing wrong with this approach, it is just that our team is passionate about different things. In fact, we’ll look a whole lot more like what I described above. We’re launching our version of food trucks, we call “Core Communities” throughout our part of the city. Like food trucks, these communities go where people are living life. Like a food truck, these communities aren’t confined to a geographic location where they’re waiting for people to hopefully come. No instead these communities are planted in the midst of the rhythms of where people live, work and play, offering a taste of the Kingdom of God.
We’ve just actually launched and are experimenting with our very first one in the Southside neighborhood of Waltham called Jesus Over Dinner. It’s something for our neighbors and we’re excited about what’s beginning to come into form. We’re also about to announce and spread the word about some interest meetings/parties we’re throwing for others who are interested in starting their own Core Community where they live, work and play. We’ll be looking to train, equip and resource dreamers, creators and enjoyers of life to start these in the places God already has them living life. Picking back up on the imagery, each of these will look slightly different, offering a slightly different menu. Yet, at the end of the day, they’ll all be part of Renaissance, giving a taste of the beauty of what Jesus came to live and die for.
In other words, we think what God is offering is too amazingly great to be in just one physical location. Which is why we’re decentralizing our start so that our city gets to encounter the goodness of God in the midst of their ordinary rhythms of life. With this, we’ll eventually be looking to start a larger gathering, starting monthly, that we’re referring to as “Celebrations.” It’s a chance for all our Core Communities to come together to celebrate what God is doing and worship with the larger movement of people.
So, that’s what is going on at Renaissance! If you’re a supporter, be praying for us as we get this off the ground. If you’re from our part of the city and want to know more, email email@example.com. I’d love to do coffee with you and hear your story.
